Our office was awarded the assignment following procurement procedures by public tender
One of the principal's requirements for the extension was to adjoin the old building. The proposal envisaging an almost floating bridge structure with an elliptical cross-section – as the load bearing capacity of the old building had not been evaluated – met with considerable resistance in the form of the accumulated professional competence of the Architectural Faculty of the Technical University of Braunschweig.
Consequently, a decision was made that the new building would co-exist alongside the old building and the ‘Oesterlen' high-rise building.
The project was axed following the formation of the new State Government in 2003.
