Complete development plan, Erding
Knowest thou not that the kings' hands can reach far?
(Ovid)
At its heart, the proposal envisages the creation of a green space to distance the new buildings from the planned and necessary car-park which is to be built. This should lessen the visual impact of the latter, which will be used mainly by visitors to the thermal spa. At the same time, there will be a green space in the centre of the entire complex for all to enjoy.
Viewed in conjunction with the individual buildings which define the spatial impression, this creates an original architectural profile in keeping with the importance of the location with the intention to imbue it with life. The entire complex is to transcend the present, straightforward and functional structural scheme – parking on the one hand and health and beauty (thermal spa) on the other – and make clear and tangible the essence of what it is aiming to achieve: health, pleasure and a sense of wellbeing. The objective is to create a spatial quality which secures the viability of the complex as a whole in the long term.
In a staggered and appropriately scaled arrangement, the buildings radiate out from the central green zone as ‘floating’ solitaires, and together create an ensemble which defines the space and is dominated and characterised by the hotel complex. A specific structural solution is devised for every utilitarian element, so as to lend the ensemble its own architectural identity. The dominant impact of the hotel is heightened by its highly distinctive, structured, expansive boundary with the adjacent space.
To accentuate the effect of the ensemble, a structurally analogous stylistic vocabulary and the use of consistent materials for the façades is essential.
