Residential area Magnitorwall, Braunschweig

As part of an invitation to tender initiated by an investor, the City of Braunschweig decided to back a residential building located to the rear of a listed monument and connected to it by a glass link, but slightly offset in height.
The contour of the building, whose self-contained character is accentuated by its barrel-shaped roof structure, is put into perspective context by its older neighbour.
A brick façade was opted for, rather than the plaster which was originally intended, on the client's express wishes.
The 16 apartments, some of them maisonettes, were all designed with individual layouts.
The older building, for which the design had been submitted, was also converted into modern, contemporary apartments (including several maisonettes) upon consultation and agreement with the historic monuments authority.
During performance phases 5 to 8, the older building was entrusted to the loving care of a capable colleague, well able to withstand the flak.
The harsh criticism levelled against the design by colleagues and the press alike prior to construction (Miscellaneous) proved completely excessive and misplaced, not least in view of the architectural reality of the surrounding area.
