Prison location, North Rhine-Westphalia
Wash me ... but don’t get me wet.
In 2001/2002 a search was made for a suitable site for a prison or correctional facility, respectively, for the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia to house approx. 900 inmates.
Following a clear, methodical structuring process, brainstorming resulted in the identification of some 40 possible sites, which were evaluated according to the following primary criteria:
-local public transport
-proximity to motorways
-compatibility within the built environment
-size and layout of the property.
System designs were developed for the short-listed properties so as to ensure that there would be no obstacles to construction.
It was, however, not possible to evaluate the political resistance to the siting of such an institution.
