Residential building Lumumbastrasse, Leipzig
Experience means nothing. One can repeat the same mistakes for 35 years.
(Kurt Tucholsky)
The proposal is for a spatial ensemble comprising four different structural elements, i.e.:
- the listed historic building on Lumumbastrasse
- a significant row of buildings on Kickerlingsberg which defines the green space
- a building on Ehrensteinstrasse which follows the road and rounds off the perimeter development
- solitaire buildings in the courtyard area.
This links ‑ as with joints ‑ the four-storey buildings forming blocks in the southwest and southeast on Kickerlingsberg and on Ehrensteinstrasse.
The building unit on Kickerlingsberg is given a rhythmic façade with joints on a respectively adapted scale creating a straight-lined, succinct yet structured space setting, a striking landmark in the urban texture. Its self-contained character is accentuated by the design of the flying roof level.
The building on Ehrensteinstrasse reinterprets the neighbouring hipped roof form with its 2-storey flying roof facing the street.
A three-storey (plus attic) building is proposed for the courtyard, with an almost identical connected pair of solitaire villas.
The variety of styles which go to make up the block-like ensemble is intended to take into account the different spatial factors and requirements of the street spaces of Kickerlingsberg with its green frontage on the one hand and of Ehrensteinstrasse on the other, as well as the courtyard situation.
