Genthin district administrative authority
Most abuse is when out of power the conscience separates.
(William Shakespeare)
In 1991, our office presented four proposals to the Genthin district administrative authority for a new administrative building. The design, which was pursued, envisaged the main building mass being isolated from its urban setting through its juxtaposition next to a lower-rise area of individual housing and creating a transition to the urban space through a graduated arrangement on Mützelstrasse and the 2-storey parliamentary area, which was intended, at the same time, to exemplify a democratic self-administration agency in the public arena. It was possible to retain many of the existing trees.
It is reached by taking a diagonal route across a forecourt onto which the hall and canteen also open. Individual agencies can be accessed separately from Mützelstrasse. The building was completed only 15 months after construction had begun.
The entrance area takes the form of a cylindrical glass-covered hall arranged internally in terraced galleries, which provides a fitting introduction to the building whilst ensuring the necessary clarity.
