Building in a tricky historic inner-city context (cf. the extension of the town hall of the City and the adult education centre of the city of Wolfenbuettel) means an especially intriguing challenge.  The city of Wolfenbuettel is a particular case in point, with its Old Town conservation area.

At the interface between the Old Town and a heterogeneous area of new build, a design was developed which, whilst continuing the construction of individual houses, with the buildings broken down in modular fashion by their differing eaves, at the same time acknowledged the the situation opening to the Old Town and the transition to the different style of architecture at the "Salzwall" by placing a solitaire building within the ensemble, which also provides a link to existing large-scale developments.

With its contour turning into the street area, the ‘Salzwall’ provides a significant point of closure to the Kleiner Zimmerhof in terms of urban space.
