The new building for Bad Doberan local authority was positioned in the open space to the east of the existing neo-classical buildings on August-Bebel-Strasse.

The new building became part of a distinguished frame of reference by virtue of the existing ‘palace garden’ and, together with the older neo-classical buildings, makes up an ensemble enclosing and redefining the ‘palace garden’ in structural terms.

This prime inner-city site, which had previously been rather off the beaten track in the city, will have a new lease of life now that there are plans to create pedestrian access to the new building from Severinstrasse and/or Beethovenstrasse; in other words, the area will be used and recognised much more extensively by the public.

The new structure with its curved lines and light, finely wrought design, provides an appropriate counterpart to the open space.  The interplay between green areas and the edifice is heightened by the scallop-shaped gradations of the monopitch roofs.  The structure has three floors and an attic level, and slopes down in gradations to the historic building housing the hall.
